This year’s We Shine 2024 Festival will light up St. Mary’s Church in Fratton with an amazing installation, thanks to a collaboration between the church, Fratton Together, University of Portsmouth and the We Shine team. At the heart of this project are three University of Portsmouth students, working with well-known local artists, Heinrich & Palmer, to create something truly unique.
Heinrich & Palmer are famous for their stunning multimedia installations around the UK. Now, they’re bringing their talent back to Portsmouth for their biggest project at We Shine. Alongside their own piece, they’ve been mentoring three MA Interior Architecture students from the University, helping them design their own light installation for the festival.
Over six mentorship sessions, students Ismail El Zahed, Ayushi Patel, and Kywat Hmu May have created a complementary piece that will be displayed in the churchyard. Their work will sit alongside Heinrich & Palmer’s main projection, “Once a Sea,” which will light up the inside of St. Mary’s Church. Together, these installations will offer a beautiful exploration of light and community, making this collaboration one of the standout features of We Shine 2024.
We Shine Portsmouth is a lively festival that turns the city into a glowing gallery with light art, installations, and performances. It’s free to attend and open to everyone, offering a memorable experience of light and creativity that highlights the city’s culture.
